god i'm glad i was born before 2000...

I can't imagine how hard it must be to be a young girl in this day and age... I know I sound like an old person afraid of the world 'going to hell in a hand basket'... but seriously, I don't recall seeing anything so perverted advertised to me as a child...

http://www.tmz.com/2008/04/30/disneys-dirty-little-victorias-secret/

Can we please stop trying to appeal to the horny 14-28 year old male demographic and actually think of, I don't know, little girls when we sell little girls' products???

So anyways, thanks, Disney, for taking the over-sexualization of little girls to a fascinatingly disgusting new level. You can go to hell now.

Whoa.

This girl doesn't need to take back the night, she needs the whole fucking 24 years she's lost in a windowless basement getting raped by her father. This is incredibly reprehensible. And it comes in the wake of a similar (yet incest-free) case of another Austrian girl who was imprisoned for 8 years by her kidnapper.

Way to go, Austria. Who do you think you are? America?

a new spin on "pimp daddy"

So this morning, I went through my usual routine. Wake up, brush my teeth, take a shower, check my email, take a look at feministing...

Little did I know I would stumble across one of the most fucked up father-daughter relationships I've ever heard of.

This dad manages his daughter's sex career and gives her bikini waxes.

Check out the video... where they even show him doing it! I'm trying to find the complete Tyra Banks episode from 4/28 to hear how on earth this family defends itself but am having no luck.

The only thing she said in her defense was "he's a professional! There's nothing sexual about that!"

yea alright.

more on: PERIODS!

So yesterday a classmate of mine who I'm working on a presentation with came over to my apartment. A tampon fell out of her backpack and onto the floor and when she realized it, she said "Oh, is this yours? no? awkwarddd!" Along with the previous blog post, this is gotten me thinking: why is menstruation so taboo? why are tampons and period talk "awkward." I mean... half the population deals with. Are they really that gross? Should we get tampons for free in public restrooms?

The eternal Cosmo question: why are do men get so uncomfortable when you talk about periods?
Personally, I don't care how uncomfortable guys get when I talk about my period because CRAMPS SUCK and if I wanna complain, I should be able to just like anyone would complain about intense pain.

here's a blog entry that is a lot more thought provoking than this one:
Coming out of the Menstruation Closet

I'm sure many of you ladies have stories about period emergencies that could have easily been avoided if talking about them wasn't so "awkward" and "inappropriate."

I suggest a feminist art project using period products. Anyone on board?

crow's feet, double chins, and other female-specific "medical issues"

I've been attacked by this idea from a wide variety of sources lately that crow's feet (the little wrinkles next to your eyes you get when you're older) are the bane of every aging woman's existence...which is something I just DON'T UNDERSTAND. I LOVE these wrinkles! To me they represent happy lives, in which the imperfectly sculpted person has spent the majority of their time smiling (and thus pinching the skin next to their eyes). I'm less thrilled about the huge frown lines which are already dividing up my face, but I don't understand why it is that smiling wrinkles are something to be despised?

So I went on a search for a website to illustrate my point (that society generally hates wrinkles...on women's faces), and I stumbled upon this little gem...

According to this book, (linked from www.mothernature.com, which promises "Natural Products. Healthy Advice") Crow's Feet are caused by too much smoking and sun exposure, double chins by too much food and sun exposure again (to fix, just try this always-healthy plan: "Cut the amount of food that you put on your plate in half, for example."), and "saggy breasts" by breastfeeding, gravity, sun exposure again (in other words, caused by LIVING). [You should combat saggy breasts til the bitter end by wearing a bra as often as possible.]

Other pressing issues addressed by these women DOCTORS in the book are "bad hair days" and "baggy knees" ("Who wants to walk around looking as though the skin around your knees is one size too big, saggy and wrinkled like an elephant instead of smooth and taut like a French dinner roll? Yet as years pass, the skin over your knees can start to look like it needs a face-lift.")

And yet, the book bills itself to be "The first self-care book for women based exclusively on advice from women doctors. This book is at the forefront of a revolution in medical care-heightened demand for women physicians by consumers..."

Wait, it's really pretending to be about female empowerment? In this great new day and age, you can fix your baggy knees and cellulite, because you should never ever have these "issues"/you should never grow up.

Whatever happened to old and wise? Respected elder? Now we want our grandma's getting boob jobs and face-lifts, to look like they're 18? We want our moms to look like they're just getting out of college? Shouldn't your body reflect the life you've lived? The experiences which have shaped you and molded you?

let's wear our blame feminism shirts on tuesday!

I'm slightly embarrassed for admitting I was looking at juicy campus... but I was with my roommate and it came up and we just laughed and got angry at how horrible it is. AND THEN I STUMBLED ACROSS THIS:

"Blame Feminism" Shirts

What are those "Blame Feminism" green shirts for? I don't understand their message.

REPLYS:

RE:"Blame Feminism" Shirts
how could you not understand that message, retard

04-23-2008

RE:"Blame Feminism" Shirts
I want to bone the chick in my discussion who was sporting one...and I do indeed blame feminism

04-23-2008

RE:"Blame Feminism" Shirts
I've seen a feminist wear it, so the message is kind of contradicting.

04-23-2008

RE:"Blame Feminism" Shirts

The whole point is the feminists wear it. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the shirts were sold by FIFE (the CIO Feminism is for Everyone).

It's intended to be sarcastic.

04-23-2008

RE:"Blame Feminism" Shirts
actually, you're all a bit wrong.

yeah, they were sold by FIFE.
but look at the BACK of the t-shirt....
it's like BLAME FEMINISM: (then on the back) for the right to vote... etc.

04-23-2008

RE:"Blame Feminism" Shirts
blame eric flow.
04-23-2008

RE:"Blame Feminism" Shirts
i have the shirt. the point is to say blame feminism for getting women the right to vote, among a bunch of other things on the list. basically, give feminism credit for these things. People like to always "blame" feminism for one thing or another, so the point is to show what good things have come from it. Can you really not figure that out??????
04-23-2008

RE:"Blame Feminism" Shirts
Well people are not going to be like, "oh my god? really!!!! why does feminism suck? Oh wait, let me look at the back of your shirt! yessss, gosh what a brilliant idea to mislead people into believing you're anti-feminist!!!"

In my opinion, the shirt is misleading people into thinking they're anti-feminists, because people wouldn't even look at the back of the shirt if the front side already sends a pretty strong message. Bad, bad idea.

04-24-2008

RE:"Blame Feminism" Shirts
Are you people really this dense? lol...

The shirt's message is quite clear, really.

04-24-2008

RE:"Blame Feminism" Shirts
yeah I blame feminism for the god-damn fucking 19th amendment...worst idea since the 18th amendment (fortunately that one was repealed)

RE:"Blame Feminism" Shirts

the red blame feminism shirts you'll see in the near future will be identical in the front, but the back will clearly read "...for the mindset that females are more than life support for a vagina"

get excited!

from a facebook group for hong kongers sick of dealing with ignorance about hong kong

"STOP TAKING THIS GROUP SO SERIOUSLY!
PS
That includes the overly sensitive HKers with sand in their vaginas too"

well... I don't know how widely used this phrase is... but its a nice reinforcement that women are irritable and anal and just need to "chill out." It's a new play on "don't get your panties in a twist."

very uncomfortable imagery.

i hope the straight-talk express runs into its own misogynist-dug ditch

So while traveling through poverty-stricken New Orleans, where most in poverty are women, John McCain stated that he opposed a bill that would make it easier for women to sue corporations for gender pay inequality.

This just goes to show that John McCain:
-does not care about women
-has a gross misunderstanding about the causes of gender wage gaps (placing the blame on a lack of "education and training," although research has shown time and time again that gender wage inequalities exist independent of such factors)
-despite his stated support for 'family values' (in regards to banning abortion), could not care less about families or their children, since equalizing pay would lead to millions of families escaping poverty (oh noes!)

So please, whether or not you're a Democrat, whether you support Obama or Clinton, do not let this misogynist asshat in office. And urge those you know to oppose him, as well.

sad :(

I feel like i'm invading a private space, but this is the internet and everything is public:

http://community.livejournal.com/proanorexia/

I was reading Courtney Martin's book (Perfect Bodies, Starving Daughters) earlier and she talked about these "ana" (as in anorexia) online communities... I had heard about them before and so I decided to check it. I found myself completely depressed but also angry. I'm so furious that so many girls have to deal with this. So angry that our society fosters this mentality. It's so incredibly fucked up. How did we get to this point?

FIFE! How do you feel about becoming more politically active? Raising more awareness on-grounds and off?

I am so excited for next year and I think it would be great if we wrote letters to our senators for a variety of issues. After going to the comprehensive sex ed event, I think it's really important that we write to our senators and representatives about why abstinence only education sucks.

Check out what these Michigan women are doing!

These students at the College of New Jersey did some sweet "culture jamming" (what it was called when i took intro to media studies)that critiqued sexism in advertisements.

women treated as "children"?

i recently attended a panel hosted by the Muslim Students Association, entitled, "are Muslim Women really oppressed?" It was a really informative panel, and it emphasized how the case of Saudi Arabia really is an exception to the larger practice of general equality between men and women in Muslim culture. With the fact that Saudi Arabia is exceptional in mind, then, I think this article deserves a fifer's attention.

"the sad truth about relationships".... i am not amused.

So I came across this video entitled "the sad truth about relationships" but I can't help but notice that this more like "the sad truth about women." It depicts women as attention-needy, boring, marriage-obsessed, and empty. This video also seems to make some statements on race and class... one person commented on it saying "Most dumb liberal American Obama voters live just like this. It's pretty sad." This person picked up on the fact that these relationships are supposed to be representive of the educated, white, upper middle class. SO problems I have with this:
1) generalized that this is how all white upper middle class women want to live their lives (not true)
2) makes women look completely responsible for these types of relationships... our society does perpetuate expectations of marriage, having children, etc but it's for some people and not for others.
3) people that do the traditional courtship, marriage, etc are not all depressed and attention-needy. Many people who live this lifestyle are happy

This awesome girl (minus her comment on wanting all children to die) showed the creator what's up:
"So, this is how you think life is eh? WELL I DISAGREE, and i'm female too!
Things i NEVER want to do in my life:
-Be all prissy and b*tchy saying that we should go to movies cause aparently its the only form of entertainment.
-Have a wedding = THATS RIGHT FOLKS, WEDDINGS ARE EVIL. They are a WASTE of money and time, sure they have tax benifits, but still. COMEPLETE BULLCRAP.
-I Dont want to have a child. I HATE CHILDREN AND THEY CAN ALL DIE! seriously, what the hell is this bull crap?!
-I would never NEVER in a million years say i don't want to travel. I WANT TO SEE THE WORLD AND LEARN ABOUT THE HUMAN MIND! I live by science AND religion, useful for philosophical talks.
-I would never let my significant other die before me, if anything i would kill myself so that i was not alone.

Screw you and your ideas. I hate you.

-love jessica."

I am not a fan of videos like this. Maybe some people do have similar relationships to this... but not because the women are so pathetic... it often has to with societal expectations that women feel pressure to fill. Women shouldn't have to feel those pressures. So maybe that's what the video is trying to say, but I'm having a hard time seeing it.

Who says women can't drive?

Over the weekend, Danica Patrick won the Long Beach Grand Prix, becoming the first woman to win a major-league Indy-car event. In a news conference, Danica said, "I'm just glad I don't have to answer that 'When are you going to win your first race?' question again."

hahahahaha

One of the best things about my job is the chance, between tasks of course, to surf the web for hilarious anti-feminist dribble and bullshit. Here is a particularly funny specimen, displaying all the hallmarks of terribleness, including

  • a. bad grammar
  • b. complete ignorance of feminisms and what they stand for
  • c. pontificating based on said ignorance using stereotypes, assumptions, second-hand info, or any combination of these
  • d. blatant [low-quality] mocking of an established feminist blogging custom (in this case, the "Anti-feminist reader" based upon feministing.com's "Weekly Feminist Reader")
  • And of course e. anger, bitterness, resentment--and lots of 'em!

woops... a day late

Women in the United States are still paid only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. And for women of color, the numbers are even worse. African-American women earn 63 cents and Latinas earn 52 cents for every dollar paid to white men.

Urge your Senators to support the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act!

The Senate is currently considering legislation that would ensure that women and other workers who experience compensation discrimination are able to obtain justice. The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (H.R. 2831) will reverse the effects of the recent Supreme Court decision Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber, which severely limits workers’ ability to vindicate their rights and distorts Congress’ intent to eliminate sex and other forms of discrimination in the workplace.

just a quick post about an upcoming event i think i'm going to try and check out from the Miller Center:

"Why Women Should Rule the World"
Q & A with Dee Dee Myers
Monday, May 5, 2008, 1:30 PM, Special Collections Library

Books will be available for purchase, and food will be provided

Dee Dee Myers was the first woman and youngest person ever to serve as
White House Press Secretary. After leaving the Clinton White House, Myers
became a consultant to the NBC series The West Wing. Before joining the
Clinton campaign in 1991, she worked on local, state, and national
campaigns, including Senator Dianne Feinstein, Governor Michael Dukakis,
Vice President Walter Mondale, and Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley. She is
currently a Vanity Fair Contributing Editor, and is a frequent political
commentator on NBC and MSNBC. Myers spent two years as the liberal co-host
of the CNBC talk show Equal Time, discussing daily political developments
with conservative co-hosts Mary Matalin and Bay Buchanan.

sounds like an interesting event and i love seeing inspiring women from politics; if anyone would like to join me (if yo're not in exams) i'd LOVE your company. <3

global issue: breast ironing

check out this video from Current TV about Breast Ironing in Cameroon.

this painful and dangerous practice affects one in four girls there. parents want to prevent their daughters from becoming sexually active and thusly pregnant too early so they iron their breasts in the hopes of making them less attractive and "protecting" them from sexual advances. comprehensive sex ed and birth control for these young women seems like a much better option but the government of cameroon refuses to admit that it's a problem and there is little to no sexual education currently offered in schools there.

warning: it's somewhat graphic, but really an important issue for feminists all around the world.

This is not our idea of pro-choice!

You know, I used to really like Damon Wayans, mostly because there's always been a soft spot in my heart reserved for movies like Major Payne, right alongside Mrs. Doubtfire and Houseguest. Unfortunately, I am seriously reconsidering that after having seen this video, part of his new comedy project WayoutTV.

It is really appalling, not just the content itself, but the fact that he and, judging by the comments left on youtube, a lot of other men think that it's hilarious. Yeah, especially since there aren't any accounts of physical violence against pregnant women as a means to terminate an unwanted (by the father) pregnancy. Oh fuck me, there are! Like a ton!
Approximately 17 percent of pregnant women report having been battered, and the results include miscarriages, stillbirths and a two to four times greater likelihood of bearing a low birth weight baby. http://www.now.org/issues/violence/stats.html
So a big fuck you, Mr. Wayans, and an even bigger one to the real "Abortion Men"...

Introducing...

NEW WEEKLY FEMINIST OPINION POLL!!!

and.... a new cutesy layout.
What do you think? Good? Bad? Change it back?
4:45 PM
This is why I'm a feminist.

There was a recent story on feministing about an "Anti-Feminist Bake Sale" at a college in PA (or something like that). On the article it linked to, there has been some heated "discussion" from both sides regarding feminism and its merits. I just looked at the comments a second ago and here is what one said:
Hello dingbats, you all already have the right to choose, you live in America, you make choices to goto school, marry or not marry, have children or not, work or let your husband do what he is supposed to do in taking care of you. Your cause does not even exist, except in Butch lovers marital and adopting agendas. To the ass-a-nine butch doll who commented by saying, "why can't the man raise the dumb kids", I hope that God(HE) does not allow you to bear children, for one because they would be in a world of hurt having a mom like you, and most likely "dumb" due to being your offspring. Get a life people, anyone who flooded the newspaper with backlash to Monday's bake sale. Good day Butch!

This is why I'm a feminist--people think that they can silence women by calling us lesbians, by calling us stupid, and by suggesting that we would fail at (our "natural" task of) being mothers. I'm a feminist because women are and have been treated as less-than-human for too damn long and people like this show us that the fight for equality is FAR from over.

Why are you a feminist?

Pregnant Man

Thomas Beatie, a 34 year old man, is pregnant. He was born "Tracy" and in his twenties decided that he was more comfortable being a man. He had his gender legally changed on his birth certificate, so he and his wife, Nancy, are legally married. Thomas had surgery to remove breast tissue, started taking testosterone, but left all of his female genitalia intact. Since his wife, Nancy, cannot have children, they decided that Thomas would. (His wife inseminated him with a syringe using sperm purchased from a sperm bank).

"It's not a male or female desire to have a child. It's a human desire."
