Feminism Today
Many people today think that feminism is radical and extreme, when in fact feminism applies to all aspects of society and includes the lives of women and men. Instead of being a minority, feminists should be the majority (maybe that's why a major feminist organization is called the "Feminist Majority"?). Here's a quote that sums up this contradiction: "Feminism has fought no wars. It has killed no opponents. It has set up no concentration camps, starved no enemies, practiced no cruelties. Its battles have been for education, for the vote, for better working conditions....for safety in the streets....for child care, for social welfare...for rape crisis centers, women's refuges, reforms in the law. (If someone says) 'Oh, I'm not a feminist,' (I ask) 'Why? What's your problem?'" -Dale Spender, author of For the Record: The Making and Meaning of Feminist Knowledge, 1985 |
