Hate Crimes Bill Passes the Senate

The original law against hate crimes, passed in 1969, covers crimes motivated by race, color, religion, or national origin. The Senate recently passed a bill that adds gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, and disability and also removes the prerequisite that the victim must be engaging in a federally protected activity. Some states had already passed similar laws (not Virginia- surprise, surprise!).

(light blue) Sexual orientation is a protected class for data collection about hate crimes. (dark blue) Sexual orientation is a protected class in hate crime legislation. (purple) Sexual orientation and gender identity are protected classes in hate crime legislation.

Equal Opportunity Issues Abroad

I am spending the summer in Jena, Germany doing some research at the Max Planck for Chemical Ecology. I was searching through the main website and found this under the tab "Equal Opportunity Issues"
