Feminist Approaches to Bioethics on Industrialized Childbirth

Happy end of semester everyone. For your procrastination pleasure here is a great article written by an OB discussing the increasing cesarean rate in our country. How can we women keep ourselves from being treated like feedlot cattle? Dr. Plante's conclusion:
As a reaction to industrial agriculture and food marketing, the Slow Food and locavore movements have recently been born. If de-escalation of our food production practices is healthier or more humane, why is intensification of our child production practices better than sustainable childbirth? I’m waiting for the birth of the revolution, or at least, the revolution of birth. Will women who are interested in Slow Food or cage-free eggs find their way to a Slow Childbirth movement? Imagine: educated upper-middle-class women who buy songbird-certified organic coffee and worry about their carbon footprint, just saying no to the quick-fix cesarean culture. If they’re not part of the problem, maybe they can be part of the solution. But the impetus must come from women themselves. Do we really believe that industrial obstetrics is the best model for ourselves and our children? We must clearly understand that real autonomy does not mean cesarean on request, but instead a spectrum of birth options that honor women’s authentic choices. Real autonomy also means, to borrow a sentiment from Gandhi, that women should bring forth the change they wish to see in the world.

a jezebel commenter's take on the double standard:

"This is basically what it comes down to:

- If you want sex, you're a skank/slut
- If you don't want sex, you're a prude

- Using birth control is 'slutty'
- Not using birth control makes you stupid

- Sex without alcohol/drugs involved is 'boring'
- Sex with alcohol/drugs is 'dumb and you deserve whatever happens to you'

- Telling your boyfriend 'No' to sex and sticking to it makes you a 'cockblock' and 'buzzkill'
- Telling your boyfriend 'No', but eventually being seduced into having sex IS THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE WAY TO HAVE SEX IN OUR SOCIETY."

i thought she was pretty clever.

Modern-day Witch Hunts

Check out this terrifying article on modern-day witch hunts.

Author this community-sanctioned violence, almost always directed at women, still occurs (even after the spread of scientific knowledge) becauseWomen are generally weaker than men. They are less able to defend themselves from braying mobs. They are easier to pin down and turn into a screaming, denying receptacle of evil. The mobs usually choose the weakest women of all—old women and little girls.

The Mommy Wars Rage On

Check out this article on the Today Show's website: Dr. Laura's 'Praise for Stay-at-Home Moms'

"In her latest book, she argues that staying home to raise children is a challenging yet rewarding experience — and more importantly, the right choice for the whole family, even communities."

Laura writes: "Until I was thirty-five, I never wanted to be a mother. At least, that’s what I thought, largely because of having been in university during the 1960s, when I was brainwashed (aka had my consciousness raised) into being a feminista for whom a career, with its promise of personal importance, power and success, was what a real woman was supposed to aspire to."

Wow. Thank goodness we feminists don't brainwash women into career zombies anymore. (Sarcasm, there.) See last spring's Alternative Domesticity zine for proof that feminists can be stay-at-home moms, career women, or moms with a career...

Luckily, the website also offers a counterpoint: Are stay-at-home moms risking everything? Author Leslie Bennetts cautions women against financial dependence

Because, you know, even if your family is lucky enough to be able to make ends meet on just your husband's income, that arrangement won't necessarily last forever. He could die, or your marriage could end in divorce, like half of them do. So even if you do choose to stay at home, it's important to have a fallback plan.

Sexual Assault on Women in the Military

I was listening to NPR today at work, as I love to do, and this morning on the Dianne Rehm Show there was a segment featuring Helen Benedict, author of "The Private Soldier," a non-fiction book about the current state of Sexual Assault and Women in the Military. It was a VERY interesting interview and, as an army brat, this is a topic that I find really troubling.

They also spoke with Kaye Whitley, director of the Defense Department's Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Office (which i didn't even know existed! but was very glad to find out).

You an listen to the full program here on the Dianne Rehm Website.

Any thoughts on the issue of sexual assault on women in the military / the role of women in the military?
