equal pay bake sale this week!
FIFE's Third Annual Equal Pay Bake Sale Men pay $1.00 Women pay $.75 Seems unfair, right? Our prices reflect the pay inequality that still exists in our country. Forty-five years after the passage of the 1963 Equal Pay Act, and we still haven't achieved pay equity. Though women in our community and everywhere are doing great things, their wallets still aren't showing it. By raising awareness we can empower women to demand equality in their pay and garner the needed support to put in place legislation that would protect a women's right to receive equal pay for doing the same work. Join FIFE on National Equal Pay Day, Tuesday, April 20 on the lawn from 10-2 to buy some delicious baked goods and support UVa's only feminist organization! *Even with the factors of educational background, etc. factored in, women still only make eighty-eight cents to a man's dollar, and for women of color, the number is even less. Legislative progress: After a decade long fight for equal wages that went all the way to the Supreme Court, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was the first piece of legislation signed by President Obama on January 29, 2009. However, a supporting piece of legislation, the Fair Paycheck Act, has still not been signed and would significantly increase the protection provided in the Fair Pay Act.
